During the macrobiotic retreat last week, the lecture of the GYN and homeopatic Doctor Jorge Hodick interested me the most. The lecture was about anti-nature medicine and its anti-natural methods of cure and what we could do to reverse or at least avoid this powerful industry in our daily life. One method that called my attention was the way he was explaining about how the human anatomy, specially the dental anatomy, dictates the way human should be eating today.
First, after thousands of years of evolution and mutations, humans today have 32 teeth from which 12 are molars, 8 are premolars, 8 are incisors and 4 are canines. The molars and premolars were made to grind food, in the case of humans - grains. The incisors are more subtable to bite vegetables and the canines to tear meat. Therefore humans have 60% of their teeth made to grind grains, 25% to bite vegetables (and fruits if you will) and 15% to tear meat. In conclusion, according to human~s dental anatomy, the most natural diet for humans to live in harmony with their environment and their health are supposed to be composed of 60% grains, 25% vegetables and 15% animal protein.
Secondly, according to our digestive system we have a much larger digestive track than carnivores and a much smaller digestive track than herbivores. This unique digestive track of humans shows that we are able to digest foods of vegetal and animal origins. And at the same time, we have an alkaline saliva with digetive enzymes made to breakdown starch (grains) and an acidic stomach that can help us digest animal proteins. Therefore a diet composed mainly of grains and vegetables complemented with a little bit of animal protein (not necessarily red meat) seems to be the most subtable for humans today. However, there is a big portion of the population today who are eating much more animal protein than necessary to support a good health which are contributing to a degradation of their own health and the health of the planet earth.
So my advise in case people want to incorporate meat in their diets is to eat little, always organic and choose eggs, fish and poultry in place of red meat. If not organic, is better to avoid them altogether, which would instead of provide us with health, would lead us to an anti-nature diet.
But of course within the human race there are great differences between population groups, ethnicity, nations and all these contribute to different dietary needs. So I guess that this is a great theory to start with and then people can adjust it to their own need. For example, I don't eat animal protein (meat, dairy or egg) every day, usually I have it once or twice a week and when I do, I use it as a way to spice up my dish, and rarely as a main course. And I have the grains and vegetables almost as the same proportion. No MUCH more grains than vegetables for me...
